Seven Surprising Places You're Using Copywriting (And You Probably Don't Realize It)

When you hear the word "copywriting" do you immediately think of long sales pages, squeeze pages, and unwanted bulk mail?

You're not alone in that thinking, but the fact is, copywriting is more than just sales messages. In fact, as an online business owner, most of the content you produce could be called copywriting at least in some sense. After all, if you're creating content with the ultimate goal of selling something, that is by definition copywriting.

1-Facebook

Sure we all like to hang out on Facebook and chat with friends, catch up on the latest funny videos, and enjoy a mindless "quiz" or two. But for coaches, Facebook is much more than that. It's a place to connect with potential clients, and that means that when you're sharing your latest blog post or program with your business friends, you have to keep good copywriting in mind.

2-LinkedIn Profile

What makes you stand out from the other coaches in your niche? Your LinkedIn profile is where you share what makes you the best person to solve your ideal client's problems. It's where you shout about your credentials and let your ego run the show. Think of your LinkedIn profile like a resume, and be sure to list your most impressive credentials.

3-About Page

Here's your chance to have some fun while blowing your own horn. It's important to know that the about page is often the most visited page on a website, so it's a critical piece of your overall brand and message. The purpose of your about page is to entice people to want to learn more about your services, so be sure to include a call to action on the page.

4-Blog Posts

All blog posts have a job to do. Maybe they're meant to lead your reader to a sales page. Perhaps you're asking for readers to subscribe to your mailing list. Maybe your blog post is designed to start a conversation. Or maybe it's just sharing great content and inviting readers to learn more by clicking on related posts. Whatever the job, it's copywriting that entices your reader to take that next action.

5-Twitter

One hundred and forty characters is precious little space for creating compelling content, yet that's exactly what you must do if you hope to use Twitter as part of your overall marketing strategy. Think of tweets like email subject lines, and craft them to convey as much information as possible while still enticing readers to take action.

6-Graphics

If you are using graphics for posts on social media platforms (think Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest), you should be conscious of the copywriting there also. It's just called "short copy" and it's still important to make it effective, especially because it's even shorter than a tweet. And of course you may have other copy that goes along with the graphic.

7-Email

Whether you're sending an email about a new product or service or simply letting readers know you have a new blog post up, your email definitely qualifies as copywriting. In fact, even the personal emails you send to prospective clients contain what we would call copywriting.

The fact is, copywriting is everywhere in your business, from your sales pages to your invoices. Whenever you ask a reader to take some action, you're writing copy, and the more comfortable with the idea of it, the better (and more natural) you'll become.

How To Scale Content Creation

Scaling content creation enables you to get the most out of the content that you spend money, time and resources on. Plus, it allows you to pad that with other people's content to bring to your audience a plethora of content that adds value to them and helps them to make purchase decisions.

Use Curated Content
Collect content that you believe your audience will be interested that you did not write. Include content that is about your niche and other topics you feel that your target audience will find educational and valuable.

Share curated content
Be sure to share this content in order to keep your audience engaged and informed. The great thing about curated content is that it enables you to participate in discussions across the web. It adds interest of your brand by those authors and allows you to impress your audience.

Know your niche
To properly curate content it's important that you understand your own brand and niche enough to choose the right content to curate. Plus, it's important to always give the right attributions and credit to the original author.

Repost Original Content
It costs a lot of money, time and effort to create content for your niche. You need content for everything, and every platform and every form, and you need it on a regular basis. If you're not repurposing and reusing some of your content, you're not getting the most out of your investment.

Share more than once
Sharing new content on social media needs to be done more than once to ensure it gets maximum views. With the way social media works, on a feed system it is likely only a very small percentage of followers, or likes, will see the share more than once, or even once.

Use older content
Alternatively, if an issue comes up that the old content piece answers then go ahead and share it again, even if it's months old. It's also okay to update the content first to be more relevant if any part of the original piece is out of date. As long as the content is relevant, original, and makes sense at that time, share away.

Use Multiple Platforms
You probably are part of many different online communities and networks - Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook groups, forums, groups and so forth. Make sure to take advantage of this fact. If you find a fresh way to share the same content throughout all these platforms then you can share the same content.

Edit for network personality
The important thing to do here is to be sure to craft each message a little differently for each network. For example, you might want to share the content in a more visual way on Pinterest than you do on Twitter.

Use different formats
A blog post becomes a slide share, becomes a video for YouTube, and becomes a podcast for iTunes. It really is that simple to reuse your content. After all, the format doesn't change the research you've already done. You're just changing the format and sometimes the mood of the research to participate on multiple platforms.

When you write and manage your content correctly, it will make your life easier and your business grow. To discover how the most successful online entrepreneurs plan, create and deliver great content, download my free checklist, The 5 Step Content Strategy, at https://jonallo.com/contentplan
