What Creates a Successful Ad For Your Customer Avatar?

Did you know that the worst mistake you can make as a small business owner is to create ads like you are a Pepsi or Toyota Corporation? That's right; many owners believe that to have a successful ad campaign they have to do what the big boys do. In truth, it does not take all the flashy, creativity and expense of a huge corporation to be successful. In reality, you will definitely go broke and be out of business in no time flat if you did that.

The most important item to consider when writing your ad is to know exactly what it is you are selling. Your job is to know your product or service so well, that your sales copy pushes your avatar's hot button hard enough that the avatar has no choice but to respond to that ad or letter. This means that you really need to know the difference between the benefits and features of your product or service

For a Successful Ad - Know the Benefits and Features

A lot of people think a feature is a benefit. But a feature is not even close to what a benefit is. A benefit is what the feature does for me, as a customer. Let's say we're buying one of the many weight loss products out there. Okay, a feature is, it is going to help me lose weight.

Now, your avatar is asking, "What do I get out of the deal?" What I get is the mental and physical joy of having more energy to play with the kids, being able to fit in my wedding dress and wear skinny jeans, being able to walk without hurting, and for people to stop calling me fatty. That's the benefits of the feature. Benefits should always come first. You want to emphasize the benefits because the real thing you are selling is not your product or service, it is EMOTIONS. You are selling the pain, agony, or even greed that people are going through.

For a Successful Ad - Know your Customer Avatar

Successful ads for the small business owner should be targeted to your customer AVATAR. So let's define and shape your AVATAR. Take out a sheet of paper and create your target.

Give your customer avatar a name.

Next, decide if they are male/female/both.
  • How old are they?
  • Where do they live? (Go to Google Trends and put in your search term for your product or service, then choose a location)
  • What is their annual salary? Determine if they are rich, middle class, poor or somewhere in between. What demographics can easily afford and benefit from your product or service?
  • What are your customer avatar hobbies and interests?
  • Are they introverted or extraverted?
  • Emotional or logical?
  • Generally happy or generally sad?
  • Single or married?
  • Children or no children?
  • Are they blue-collar or white-collar workers?

Once you know your niche, your targeted group of people, then it is easier to gear your marketing and advertising toward them specifically. Yes, everybody may be able to benefit and use your product or service, but you can't market to the entire world as a small business owner. Now that you have some insight into your customer avatar you can target your postcards, classifieds, sales letters and other marketing to them directly.

Remember, you are not selling your product or service; you are selling emotions. You are the solution to their problems. You have what they need to lose the weight, to stop the pain, to get out of debt, to stop the FEAR.

Avatar Marketing

There is a reason that some marketers excel, while others struggle. Some people believe that the most important aspect of building your business is the size of your list. If that were the case, spammers would be the richest people in the world. So, why aren't they?

It is not just how many people you have on your list that determines how much money you make. If you have 100,000 people on your list, but none of them are at all interested in your product or service, then what good is that list? You would be better off having a list of 10 people that are interested in what you are offering.

What is Avatar Marketing?
Avatar Marketing is when you create a specific avatar or ideal customer/business partner, and you gear your marketing towards attracting that specific type of person.

An Example: You are selling a fitness product for people that want to lose weight. Who are you going to market towards? Would it be personal trainers or house moms? Athletes or people with diabetes? You are going to market to the ones that are going to be looking to lose weight, not the ones that are already in shape.

Creating the ideal Avatar to market to.

Things to consider:
Who would use your products/services - Think about who would actually be looking to purchase your product or service.
Where would they be looking? You want to make sure that your business is where people are going to find it.
Income - Are you marketing to people that are likely to buy your product. It is one thing if you are marketing a $20 product. If you are marketing a higher end product, such as a multi thousand product product, you need to make sure that you are marketing to people that are going to be able to afford the product.

For Avatar Marketing to been done properly, take the time to actually write up who your avatar is.

Who is your ideal customer?
Where are they going to be looking for you?
Are you marketing to people who can afford your product or service?

When you can answer yes to all three of those questions, then you are on the right track.

Put yourself in the customer's shoes. Pretend that you are looking for your product or service. Where would you go to look for it? Why are you looking for it? This is Avatar Marketing!
