Did you know that the worst mistake you can make as a small business owner is to create ads like you are a Pepsi or Toyota Corporation? That's right; many owners believe that to have a successful ad campaign they have to do what the big boys do. In truth, it does not take all the flashy, creativity and expense of a huge corporation to be successful. In reality, you will definitely go broke and be out of business in no time flat if you did that.
For a Successful Ad - Know the Benefits and Features
A lot of people think a feature is a benefit. But a feature is not even close to what a benefit is. A benefit is what the feature does for me, as a customer. Let's say we're buying one of the many weight loss products out there. Okay, a feature is, it is going to help me lose weight.
Now, your avatar is asking, "What do I get out of the deal?" What I get is the mental and physical joy of having more energy to play with the kids, being able to fit in my wedding dress and wear skinny jeans, being able to walk without hurting, and for people to stop calling me fatty. That's the benefits of the feature. Benefits should always come first. You want to emphasize the benefits because the real thing you are selling is not your product or service, it is EMOTIONS. You are selling the pain, agony, or even greed that people are going through.

For a Successful Ad - Know your Customer Avatar
Successful ads for the small business owner should be targeted to your customer AVATAR. So let's define and shape your AVATAR. Take out a sheet of paper and create your target.
Give your customer avatar a name.
Next, decide if they are male/female/both.
- How old are they?
- Where do they live? (Go to Google Trends and put in your search term for your product or service, then choose a location)
- What is their annual salary? Determine if they are rich, middle class, poor or somewhere in between. What demographics can easily afford and benefit from your product or service?
- What are your customer avatar hobbies and interests?
- Are they introverted or extraverted?
- Emotional or logical?
- Generally happy or generally sad?
- Single or married?
- Children or no children?
- Are they blue-collar or white-collar workers?
Remember, you are not selling your product or service; you are selling emotions. You are the solution to their problems. You have what they need to lose the weight, to stop the pain, to get out of debt, to stop the FEAR.
